Historical Context & Design Significance:
This 9-piece legacy coin lot features a wonderful assortment of classic Mercury Silver Dimes spanning the pivotal years of the Second World War. Designed by famed sculptor Adolph A. Weinman, this iconic series features a stylized portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap on the obverse—symbolizing freedom of thought. The reverse displays a traditional Roman fasces entwined with an olive branch, signifying America's military readiness balanced by a desire for peace.
Individual Coin Condition & Variety Notes:
1940 Philadelphia Strikes (2 Coins): Show moderate to light circulation wear. They display very attractive eye appeal with strong, uniform satin fields and crisp outer rim lettering.
1941 Philadelphia Strike (1 Coin): A highly unique curiosity piece. It features a heavy, dark charcoal and localized black environmental patina across the portrait's face, adding severe contrast to the design recesses.
1943 Philadelphia Strike (1 Coin): Retains excellent details. High-point wear is restricted to the highest curves of the hair waves and wing feathers.
1944 Multi-Mint Group (3 Coins): Includes standard Philadelphia business strikes along with a crisp 1944-D Denver Mint variant showing a well-defined branch mint mark under the reverse olive wreath. Surfaces are bright with clean margins.
1945 Philadelphia Strikes (2 Coins): Features honest, late-war pocket circulation wear. The portrait borders remain sharp, while the reverse fasces bands show typical smoothing.
