The M1A1 was specifically designed for airborne troops and is distinguished by its side-folding wire stock, leather cheek pad, and pistol-grip wooden fore-end, allowing for a more compact profile than the standard fixed-stock M1 Carbine. Serial number 6,748,261 places this carbine in the late World War II production range associated with Inland, the prime contractor and largest producer of M1 Carbines during the war. Inland was the only prime manufacturer of the M1A1 folding-stock paratrooper model during original U.S. military production, making authentic Inland M1A1 carbines especially desirable among collectors.
