Nahua Tecuani Ceremonial Jaguar Masks

Description

These vibrant Nahua Indian of central Mexico ceremonial masks root themselves in ancient pre-Columbian symbolism. Representing the tecuani, a Nahuatl word translating to "wild beast" or "one who eats people," commonly associated with the jaguar or tiger. Hand-carved and painted with distinct yellow-and-black spotted patterns, each piece features prominent tusks, bright red extended tongues, wide glass eyes, and dramatic boar-bristle whiskers framing the snouts. Used in the Danza de los Tecuanes, these striking folk-art ceremonial pieces capture the ferocious power and enduring spiritual presence of the revered apex predator in Mesoamerican tradition. One of the masks is missing half of its tusks, another mask has a repaired tusk. Please see photos for more details.
