1924 Mexico Un Peso Silver Coin - Circulated (.720 Fine Silver, Cap & Rays Type)

1924 Mexico Un Peso Silver Coin - Circulated (.720 Fine Silver, Cap & Rays Type)

Description

Designation: 1924 Mexico "Un Peso" Silver Cap & Rays Business Strike Mintage Year: 1924 Mint Location: Mexico City Mint (Features the classic, tiny "Mo" branch mint mark flanked at the base of the reverse wreath) Denomination: Un Peso ($1 MXN) Composition: 72% Silver, 28% Copper (Known historically as Ley .720; contains 0.3856 Troy Ounce pure silver weight) Grade/Condition: Circulated / Fine to Very Fine (Mixed F–VF Details) Historical Context & Design Details: The Republic's Monetary Anchor: Struck during the post-revolutionary consolidation period of the United Mexican States. The "Ley .720" silver standard was introduced in 1920 to stabilize the nation's circulating coin economy following decades of fiscal volatility, cementing this specific type as one of the most recognizable historic trade coins of North America. The Obverse: Features the iconic Mexican National Arms layout detailing a powerful golden eagle perched proudly atop a prickly pear cactus while actively devouring a rattlesnake. The upper rim is inscribed with the national title ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS, flanked directly beneath the eagle's wings by the bold silver purity numbers "0.720". The Reverse: Showcases a beautifully localized rendering of the historic radiant Liberty Cap (Phrygian cap) emblazoned with the incuse motto LIBERTAD. The cap splits a dramatic background sequence of long sunburst rays, positioned gracefully above a tied lower structural wreath of oak and laurel branches. Condition & Eye Appeal Notes: Surfaces & Patina: The coin showcases a beautifully seasoned, honest circulated look. The fields feature a uniform medium-gray slate patina that deepens into a rich, darker charcoal profile within the letters and surrounding the eagle's feathers, offering excellent visual depth. Widespread tiny bag abrasions and trace field scuffs are consistent with historical pocket circulation. Wear Analysis: Moderate circulation smoothing is localized across the highest design high points, primarily softening the details along the eagle’s central breast plumage, the contours of the cactus pads, and the center fold lines of the reverse Phrygian cap. All crucial perimeter inscriptions, the "M" mint mark, and the complete "1924" date line remain fully raised, sharp, and highly readable. The coin is free of harsh wire-brush marks or modern graffiti.  Edge & Presentation: The outer plain edge retains its traditional, incuse-stamped national motto lettering reading INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD with solid structural integrity. Cleanly secured inside a premium, protective round acrylic coin capsule.
