Description

Designation: United States Winged Liberty Head "Mercury" Dime Mixed-Date Estate Lot Mintage Years Included: (2) 1934, 1935, (2) 1936, (3) 1937, and (3) 1939 Mint Locations Included: Philadelphia (Struck without mint marks) and San Francisco ("S" Mint Mark) Denomination: Ten Cents ($0.10 USD each / $1.10 Total Face Value) Composition: 90% Silver, 10% Copper (0.0723 Troy Ounce pure silver weight per coin / 0.79 oz total silver) Grade/Condition: Circulated / Good to Very Fine (Mixed G–VF Condition Tiers) Historical Context & Design Significance: This 11-piece estate collection showcases a consecutive run of classic Mercury Silver Dimes issued during the height of the Great Depression and leading up to the outbreak of WWII. Designed by renowned sculptor Adolph A. Weinman, this timeless series features a stylized portrait of Lady Liberty on the obverse wearing a winged Phrygian cap to symbolize freedom of thought. The reverse displays a Roman fasces entwined with an olive branch, signifying America's military strength balanced by a desire for peace. Individual Coin Condition & Variety Notes: 1934 Philadelphia Strikes (2 Coins): Show moderate to heavy circulation wear. Inscriptions and dates are completely legible with a smooth, natural gray patina. 1935 Philadelphia Strike (1 Coin): Displays generalized pocket wear across the high points of the portrait and a soft charcoal-colored surface tone. 1936 Philadelphia Strikes (2 Coins): Features attractive overall eye appeal. One piece retains exceptionally sharp hair details and clear wing definition behind Liberty's cap. 1937 Multi-Mint Group (3 Coins): Includes standard Philadelphia strikes paired with a highly collectible 1937-S San Francisco Mint branch issue, clearly identified by the micro "S" mark stamped on the reverse lower-left rim. 1939 Multi-Mint Group (3 Coins): Features a wonderful mix of patinas, highlighted by a dark, heavily toned example displaying a rich charcoal environmental patina that offers deep contrast within the design recesses. Reverse Conditions: All eleven reverses are complete, clearly displaying the classic fasces and olive branches enclosing the central "ONE DIME" text denomination. Surface conditions mirror their obverses, showing typical varying levels of honest circulation wear, light pocket friction, and clean rim frames.
