Antique Primitive Folding Wire Egg Basket

Description An exceptional late 19th to early 20th-century primitive American antique folding wire egg basket from an unknown maker. This utilitarian farmhouse relic features a clever, dynamic design constructed from a series of interlocking heavy-gauge woven wire loops. The collapsible framework is engineered with a flexible mid-level hinge line, allowing the upper half of the basket to fold down completely inside the base section to create a flat, space-saving profile for storage. When fully extended into a basket configuration, the upper perimeter forms a decorative, scalloped accordion-style rim accented by two integrated, flexible wire carry handles. The base is constructed from concentric wire circles bound together with tight wire wraps, engineered to safely cradle fresh farm eggs. This versatile country primitive piece serves beautifully as a functional kitchen fruit holder or a rustic accent piece. Dimensions Diameter: Approximately 8.0 inches (20.3 cm) at the widest upper opening. Height: Approximately 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) tall when fully extended. Condition Report True Structural Integrity: The basket is in excellent antique condition. The flexible structural frame retains its shape well and collapses smoothly along its central axis without binding or resistance. True Wire Assessment: A meticulous inspection reveals no broken welds, severed wires, or unraveling sections along the complex looped loops. The perimeter rim and baseline ring remain level and square. True Finish & Patina: The raw wire displays a gorgeous, authentic dark brownish-gold antique patina. The surface shows minor, honest age-related oxidation, tiny spots of superficial surface tarnish, and slight color variation, all highlighting its long historical survival without modern chemical interference.
